I came up with the title of this tune years ago while binge-watching b.s. Television programming on a visit with family in Fresno. I figured it would be a cool title for a song one day so I just hid it away in my mental Rolodex. Honestly, I thought it would be a "filler" track. I didn't put a great deal into the pre-production other than bringing it to Cam one afternoon at El Sob 1. We played around with lyrics for a bit, but none of the melodic stuff stuck until Cam's 13-year-old daughter Mina came in and started vocalizing an ethereal sounding line over the B section. We came up with three parts that day, each representing one of the characters a pimp, a preacher, and a politician. The head (melody) in the A section was inspired by a song called "Hustler" by an artist that Cam and I used to play with back in the early aughts. We cut the rhythm tracks at Bird & Egg on the same night as "SL23" and "World Without." What a super weird session that was. I was physically there, mentally somewhere else, on auto-pilot. I was even asleep on the couch as Eamonn played those amazing piano parts. When I say I was asleep, I mean I was what the old folks called "dead to the world." Thank God for those absolute savage musicians keeping it in check and then some. The Theodoras, Mina, Rich Armstrong, and Tony Peebles came in later with that extra-extra sauce.
