Potion 9 (for Cia)

This song started as an assignment for Bill Shannon's music theory class that I was taking at Chabot College in Hayward, Ca. It originally had an electronic house music vibe with the melody played on a beautiful Peavy Cirrus. I'd recently met a young lady who would become my best friend and later, my wife. She is the youngest of 9.

The picture to the left is one of the first that she'd shared with me. She told me that she enjoyed washing dishes when she was a kid. And that's where we're different. The picture on the other page may be the first "selfie" that I'd seen at that point. She took it using a Nokia flip phone while sitting on the bed at her apartment. She became a fantastic photographer and visual artist.

When the time came to recut this track, Cam had the idea of bringing in Sanara Pippins' voice in the second A section to accompany the melody. This production move symbolizes our union as the song opens with a single theme and then joined by Sanara's beautiful vocal, representing Cia's entrance.

We were at Cam's studio tracking background vocals for "The Ghost of St. Ann" and were all incredibly tired. I remember that it was cold and raining and that I was all good with wrapping the session, but Sanara, with all of her radiant and positive energy, got a second wind from somewhere and cut her parts at around 1 am.

This tune is a journey of sorts and reminds me of Bob James' "Angela," the theme from the 70's T.V. show "Taxi," Jamiroquai in the middle section and something very "Stevie Wonder" in the outro. The last chord is a reminder that life is fluid. "Nothing is either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." - Shakespeare
